Coal mine methane capture and utilization
What is coal mine methane?
Methane is naturally present in coal. Once a coal seam is disturbed, as it is during mining, it will produce methane indefinitely. This methane seeps through mine portals and the ground over mine cavities. Per ton, methane is 86 times more effective than carbon dioxide at trapping infrared radiation, making it a dangerous greenhouse gas. Managing emissions is critically necessary to reduce methane’s negative climate impact and remove air pollution from coal communities.
Solutions
-
Methane Capture
Prevent methane at active or inactive coal mine sites from freely venting into the atmosphere.
-
Electricity Generation
Use methane as an energy source to create electricity that powers onsite infrastructure or is sold to electricity providers.
-
Certified Carbon Offsets
Sell or purchase carbon offsets that incentivize new methane emissions reduction projects.
-
Remediation Advisory
Get help from experts to assess methane leaks, potential for capture and economic viability of mitigation solutions.
