Current Projects
Elk Creek Mine
The Elk Creek project is a collaboration between Aspen Skiing Company, Oxbow Mining, Gunnison Energy and MethaneRx. It consists of a methane capture system, three megawatts of electricity generation that is purchased by Holy Cross Energy, and oxidizers to destroy additional gas. The electricity generated is enough to power all four of Aspen Skiing Company’s resorts, including lodging and restaurants. Certified carbon offsets are created for both the destruction and utilization of this methane. This project has been active since 2013.
Cambria 33 Mine
This project captures methane at the Cambria 33 Mine in Pennsylvania. We have used the methane for both electricity generation and pipeline injection. At present, methane is destroyed via oxidation. Certified carbon offsets are created for both the destruction and utilization of this methane. This project has operated since 2008.
Coal Basin Climate Project
The Coal Basin Climate Project focuses on an abandoned mine area near Redstone, Colorado and seeks to mitigate an estimated 1.3 million cubic feet per day of leaking methane. In partnership with the Community Office for Resource Efficiency and Delta Brick & Climate Company, MethaneRx is collaborating with stakeholders including environmental organizations, county officials and local businesses. The project has received $1.2 million in congressionally directed spending and $200,000 from Pitkin County.
